Sentence
is a word, clause, or phrase or a group of clauses or phrases forming a
syntactic unit which expresses an assertion, a question, a command, a wish, an
exclamation, or the performance of an action, that in writing usually begins
with a capital letter and concludes with appropriate end punctuation, and that
in speaking is distinguished by characteristic patterns of stress, pitch, and

The Types of Sentence in English
1.
Simple
Sentence
A simple sentence, also
called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a
complete thought.
Example:
a. Alfi
is walking.
b. Elok
and Haroh are playing badminton.
c. Mairok
is going to market and shopping there.
The three examples above
are all simple sentences. Note that sentence 2 contains a compound subject, and
sentence 3 contains a compound verb.

Compound
Sentence
A compound sentence
contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator or conjuction. The
coordinators are as follows: for, and,
nor, but, or, yet, so. (helpful hint: The first letter of each of the
coordinators spells FANBOYS).
Example:
a. We
went to the post office, for we
needed some stamps.
b. My
hobby is writing, and his hobby is
playing football.
c. He
does not listen to me, nor understand
me.
d. You
say love me, but you never hold me
anymore.
e. I
take my money at the bank, or I sell
my mobile phone.
f. I
want you to go on the trip, yet I
worry that you are really not old enough.
g. I
feel bored, so I go to shopping.

Complex
Sentence
A complex sentence has
an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex
sentence always has a subordinator such as because,
since, after, although, or when (and many others) or a relative
prounoun such as that, who, or which.
Example:
a. After
she finished her assignment, she went to the canteen.
b. Jatmiko
came late because his motorcycle is broken on the way.
c. The
handsome man who sit in beside me is my brother.

Compound-Complex
Sentence
A compound-complex
sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
Example:
a. If
I change my habit, my parent will give me a gift, so I must change my habit to
become a diligent person.
b. Although
he likes to go to camping, He has not had the time to go lately, and he has not
found anyone to go with.
c. We
decided that the movie was too voilent, but our children , who like to watch
scary movies, thought that we were wrong.
